The Islamic Development Bank is an international Islamic financial institution established in 1974 by a group of countries belonging to the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries).
The purpose of the Bank is to foster the economic development and social progress of member countries and Muslim communities individually as well as jointly in accordance with the principles of Shari’ah i.e. Islamic Law. The bank provides equity capital and grant loans for productive projects and enterprises besides financial assistance to its 57 member countries in other forms. Additionally the bank creates and operates trust funds and special funds for specific purposes e.g. a fund for assistance to Muslim communities in non-member countries. It promotes trade amongst member countries and extend training and technical expertise.
Since its approval the IDBG have provided net loan approvals of USD 128.8 billion. The bank has a AAA credit rating from Moody’s and as at Nov 2017 it has a total authorized capital of USD 154 billion with subscribed capital of USD 77 billion.
